How To Choose Energy Efficient Consumer Electronics

In excess of 30 percent of an average electricity spend goes on powering consumer electronics. With rising prices and as we look to cut down on our energy consumption, it is well worth following a few simple guidelines to keep our tech as energy efficient as possible.

Above anything else, it is important to research any purchases thoroughly. With so many suppliers these days, this isn’t a particularly hard task either; so there is no excuse for not doing it really. It may seem easiest to buy the latest big release product of course, but there is so much more out there; often doing a better job at a cheaper price.

Recognizing the need to reduce consumption, manufacturers themselves list information with how environmentally their products are, so there is no need to compromise on functionality, style or design.

Though shopping online will most likely get the best deals, there is no reason why you cannot head in store and ask staff about the credentials of a product. Staff are increasingly trained to field such questions, so it should not be too arduous. Armed with the necessary information, you can head back home and look for the best deal.

A great way to cut down on energy use is to buy integrated appliances. Televisions with digital receivers and recorders built in are great for example. Much the same can be said for inbuilt DVD or BluRay players too; certainly in bedrooms, studies and guest rooms for example.

Having made the right purchase, your use of your consumer electronics is important too. It is estimated that around 10 percent of energy consumption is through leaving systems on standby. Whilst this may be necessary at times, when recording things for example, it is not always the case; so try to think a little more carefully about when things need to be on and when they do not.
